The Executive, Financial Planning & Analysis is a senior financial leader and trusted thought partner to health system leaders. The leader is a critical player to achieving the organization's financial, strategic, and operational mission and vision. The Executive, FP&A will serve as the voice of the CFO for all reporting, forecasting, and analytics matters across the enterprise. This role is operationally responsible for the financial planning, budgeting, capital planning, and forecasting process. The Executive is also responsible for developing financial and metric reporting, new business, and expansion pro-formas, and the analysis of efficiency and effectiveness of the operational and shared service functions. This individual will be responsible maintaining long-term financial plans illustrating both income statement and balance sheet performance of the organization. This includes developing, monitoring, and ensuring the reliability of business case development for mergers, acquisitions and strategic initiatives and investments. The Executive, FP&A will partner with Health System, Division, Function and Market leadership to structure and analyze data in support of operating and strategic decision-making. They oversee the financial performance reporting of the system, including support of the quarterly and monthly performance operating reviews, variance analysis, and tracking of new services. As part of the finance executive team, this leader will play a critical role in the development of business plans to help guide the strategic direction of Adventist Health. The position will also act as advisor to leaders in making strategic and operational data-based decisions by providing accurate and actionable financial analysis and insight.

This leader will establish financial policies, procedures, and reporting systems within the system and will include review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and statistics, management, preparation, and review of annual operating and capital budgets, and management of financial operations. They will advise and work closely with the Senior Leadership Team.

In addition, they will work in cooperation and in a consultative manner with the senior leadership/management, medical staff, and ancillary/support/clinical areas, in the organization's decision-making structures and processes. This key leader will provide analytics around financial objectives and policies to maximize return on Adventist Health's financial assets.


Essential Functions:


  • Responsible for the design, development, and execution of the enterprise financial planning operations, including intra-year forecasting, capital management, annual financial and capital planning, and long-range financial and capital planning.
  • Participate in the enterprise strategic planning process and drive alignment and integration of financial planning and strategic planning cycles.
  • Partner with the enterprise CFO to:
    • Lead dynamic financial and strategic analyses for the board of directors, system cabinet and other councils, and system and division leadership.
    • Align short-term and long-range financial goals of key System programs and objectives to enable execution.
    • Communication and distribution of consolidated budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
  • Develop and drive the performance improvement and change management strategy within finance by:
    • Effectively communicating the vision of the future for a best-in-class Financial and Accounting Services function and equipping the team to execute.
    • Identifying and applying trends and best practices in planning, finance, and accounting practices, tools, and technology from vertical industries.
    • Collaborating with functional team leaders on improvements to enterprise financial reporting, performance management, and financial analyses and modelling to better support business decision making.
    • Leveraging agile/lean methodologies to improve financial and accounting services (continuous feedback loops, iterative processes, user focused, etc.)
  • Design, implement, and stabilize System's new financial planning tool, including improving platforms for dynamic reporting, analytics, and dashboarding.
  • Lead key elements of the strategic capital process, including the capital planning cycle, forecasting, ROI analysis, prioritization, approval, and tracking of projects across the enterprise.
  • Support System's mergers, acquisitions, integration, and new business and venture efforts through development of pro forma standards, templates, and targets.
  • Proactively evaluate financial results by service line, program, market, and asset benchmarking to identify opportunities and provide substantive advice relative to improving financial performance. Identify performance trends and future changes, analyze the impact of these on financial operations, and drive change in operating decisions. Proactively engage with senior leaders and management to ensure attainment of financial and strategic goals, ensuring that goals are in alignment with the System's strategic and financial goals.
  • Identify and manage continuous improvement initiatives and drive strategic organizational initiatives. Establish operational objectives for the department including work plans and delegating assignments to team.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.



The Executive, FP&A will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer for Adventist Health, and partner with the Enterprise President, division presidents, Chief Business Officer, and other key system executives. The role will be a member of the Finance Cabinet and work frequently and collaboratively with the division finance offi cers.

This executive will be responsible to build the operating model required for success.



The primary location for the role will be Roseville, CA. The individual will likely be expected to travel periodically to gain market knowledge and partner on key initiatives and strategies.

The leader will demonstrate the ability to work with the Financial, Operational, Clinical, and Executive leadership to help shape the organization's business and financial strategy. The leader will be creative, curious, and capable of thinking broadly about business and demonstrate the ability to leverage trends and best practices from other industries and apply to the System. They will use analytics and strong conceptual thinking skills to generate meaningful insight. The candidate will also be able to link strategies to clearly actionable initiatives, balancing collaboration, and clinical financial, strategic, and operational considerations.


Collaboration and Team Leader

The successful leader will demonstrate leadership and management skills in the finance function, including a minimum of ten years of experience in executive management leading a financial team of similar scope and scale in a matrixed organization. The ideal candidate will be able to articulate a clear and compelling vision of the future, lead with drive and energy, and promote a culture of innovation and creative thinking.

Key to success in supporting the System's drive for results will be the ability to work effectively with different constituencies. The Executive, FP&A will need to communicate clear, accurate, and timely financial and strategic information to both internal and external parties. Internally, the candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to influence strategic direction and decision making with physicians and senior management as a result of their credibility and functional expertise. This will require the successful leader to assimilate others' ideas and input, while shaping and influencing decisions that maximize financial performance.

You'#CD#ll be successful with the following qualifications:



  • Bachelor'#CD#s degree in finance, accounting or related field is required.
  • Master'#CD#s degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field is strongly preferred.


Work Experience:


  • Ten or more years of experience in executive management and leading a team of similar scope and scale.

  • Demonstrated success in managing the financial functions utilizing technology (financial and statistical reporting, operations analysis, and data integrity) required to support the growth of a hospital or multi­#CD# hospital system.
  • A history of innovation in organization development, team development, and in developing solutions to support a data driven environment.
  • Experience in presenting information to senior leadership, management, and employee groups is a must.


Required Licenses/Certifications:


  • Certified Public Accounting (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Advanced certification through Healthcare Financial Management Association is also preferredRefer to the Required Licenses and Certifications list for additional job and/or unit specific requirements.
